SILVERTONE SPEED CONTROLLER.

The Silvertone Speed1B is a low cost very high performance speed control, designed specifically for remote control applications that call for high currents and voltages, but do not require a brake. This type of application includes a wide variety of model aircraft, model boats and a host of non-modelling applications. To assist those using the Speed1B for non-modelling applications, where a remote control system is not required, a small add-on pulse generator is available. This unit turns the Speed1B into a versatile, self-contained speed controller capable of reliably controlling 80A at 30V from a 10K potentiometer when fitted with eight high quality FETs. In this configuration no radio system is required.

Designed with maximum flexibility in mind, this unit has some interesting and novel features. Primarily developed as a semi kit, the basic unit is a fully loaded surface mount printed circuit board less FETs, which comes fully tested and aligned to operate from a 5V pulse with a pulse width variation of 1 - 2ms. This suits most modern radio control systems. Moreover, there is sufficient range in the adjustment potentiometers to allow compatibility with older R/C systems that operate outside these parameters.

Speed1B fitted with four FETs and the PG-1 pulse generator. In this configuration it can deliver 30A continuous at 24V with a simple 10K potentiometer acting as the control element. No radio required.

There are three controls fitted, input pulse neutral, input pulse-width sensitivity and motor driver pulse frequency which is variable between 500 - 3000cps. With the correct choice of FETs extremely low ON resistances can be obtained with this unit (under 2milliohms) thus delivering maximum power to the motor. In this instance, maximum efficiency is directly related to the price of the FETs fitted. The lower the ON resistance the higher the cost of each FET. For this reason, we supply the basic unit less FETs. Thus depending upon the application from, 1 - 8 FETs can be fitted to keep the cost of the finished unit contained. For very high current applications fit eight of the best FETs you can afford.

A unique feature of this unit is the variable motor drive pulse frequency. During development we found that depending upon what FETs are fitted and how many, the type of motor used, motor RPM or whether used in a car, boat or aircraft, the maximum efficiency occurred at different motor drive frequencies for each application. By providing adjustment for this frequency we have thus allowed the user to tune for maximum efficiency in the actual application at hand. This can result in substantial increases in run time from any given battery pack.

In addition to the basic surface mounted PCBs, fully assembled and tested units fitted with as many FETs as required can be supplied to order.

SILVERTONE PG-1. PULSE GENERATOR MODULE.

The Silvertone PG-1 is a small module (see photo above) that will generate a 1 - 2ms pulse every 20ms, (see above timing diagram above) thus emulating a receiver. Designed for the SPEED1B speed control module, it also has many uses in standard R/C work. Ideal as a small field servo tester or at the heart of a full servo test system. The PCB has space for a TO220 voltage regulator capable of driving most standard servos. Two types of regulators are available the standard 7805 (5V) or the 2950 low drop-out regulator. The 2950 being the more expensive of the two. The 2950 may be run from a 6V battery and will run the servo down to servo drop-out voltage which is approximately 3.6V. The control element is a simple 10K potentiometer. The fully assembled and tested unit comes with servo lead and potentiometer fitted.

SILVERTONE FS-2. IN-LINE FAIL-SAFE UNIT FOR RECEIVERS.

This module is a simple plug in Pulse Omission Detector (P.O.D.) module which will only work on a complete loss of signal, thus there is no lockout function to cause unwanted problems. The unit simply plugs into the servo lead on any channel on which fail-safe is required. One unit is required for each channel. Approximately one half of a second after the input signal is disrupted the servo will drive to a predetermined position, set by the fail position pot in the FS-2 module. Most common application is for a fail-safe throttle.

This unit is available in two models, the FS2A, pre-wired for use without back-up battery and the FS-2B, pre-wired for use with a back-up battery. The FS-2A can be converted very quickly into an FS-2B module by the user.

Operation is very simple. Just plug the servo plug into the channel required to be converted to Fail-Safe operation. Plug the appropriate servo into the socket on the Fail-Safe module. (Fig 1) Switch on the RX power but leave the TX OFF. The servo will take up the FAIL position after about a one half second delay. Set the desired FAIL position with the potentiometer located at the end of the PCB.

 SILVERTONE MX-2 IN-LINE MIXER MODULE.

Add the power of mixing to your simple two channel R/C system. Simply plug in the MX-2 between the receiver and servos and instant mixing is available on any two channels. Ideal for flying wings, deltas, "V" tails, twin throttles and a host of other applications.

Silvertone MX-2 mixer modules (one with case removed). Unit may be safely used encased in heat shrink instead of the case supplied.

The MX-2 features three point tuning with a single ratio of mix potentiometer and a potentiometer for centring each servo. The ratio of mix pot allows the ratio of mix to be set from 90% : 10% to 10% : 90%. The servo connectors are supplied fitted and JR style servo plugs are combined with Futaba style sockets. This allows the unit to be plugged into almost any receiver and accept almost any servos without taking a knife to the connectors. The unit may be safely operated with the case removed if space is at a premium. A length of suitable heat-shrink tubing is supplied as a standard option. This unit is voltage stable and very easy to use, providing excellent flexibility in regard to servo travel length and neutrals.

RELAY SWITCHER

Replace those clumsy servo operated switches with a modern microprocessor controlled relay switch unit. Simply plugs into any receiver servo socket. Fitted with a sturdy 10A relay this unit provides a most versatile interface between your R/C receiver and the real world.

The switch point very simple to set and is programmable over the full pulse width range of 1 - 2ms.

Under construction. More to come.
